Tshwete was safety and security minister under former president Thabo Mbeki.
Nqakula, also a former safety and security minister, said the rifts in the African National Congress would give “snakes” such as the Democratic Alliance the opportunity to rise to power. “Let’s be careful we do not create conditions where snakes we are meant to kill are instead fattened by our own.”
The Times further reported that Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula encouraged the ANC Youth League’s drive for nationalisation. Mbalula, the league’s former leader, was in the Eastern Cape over the weekend. He said the call for the mines to be nationalised was not a crime.
“The youth league started the battle of ideas on nationalisation. It is not a crime because it is about improving the lives of people,” he was quoted as saying.
“But you must say it with sober minds. You must be able to stand your ground and not complain in the corners, because you can’t pray for rain and, when there is rain, complain.”
According to the report ANCYL league members tried to turn the event in the Transkei into a campaign rally for Mbalula.
Mbalula is favoured by the ANCYL to replace current ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe at the party’s elective conference in Mangaung in December. — Sapa.
