Process Certification Scheme meet in the Democratic Republic of Congo for the 2011 KP plenary from Sunday.
The KP plenary will be held in Kinshasa, DRC from October 30 to November 3. It is anticipated that the certification of Anjin, which is a joint venture between Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation and a Chinese firm, will be a topical issue at the plenary session. The deputy minister of Mines and Mining Development Gift Chimanikire recently told Parliament that the upcoming KP plenary would address the issue of Anjin being allowed to export its stock.
Deputy minister Chimanikire also said Anjin is presently yielding an average of 234 749 carats a month. A company official who spoke to the Herald Business said they believe they have fully complied with the minimum KP requirements and should be allowed to commence the exportation of the gemstones.
It is also expected that the plenary will see resolution of the general dispute around the Marange diamonds.
A recent intercessional meeting held in DRC resolved that there should be unconditional export of diamonds mined by Mbada and Marange Resources while the other mining companies in Chiadzwa will be subject to monitoring before certification.
There has been a lot of politicisation of the Marange diamonds and some members of the KP, especially civic society organisations such as Partnership Africa Canada (PAC) and Global Witness, having indicated that they will not participate at the upcoming KP plenary session.
Meanwhile, the Murowa diamond mine’s output rose 83 percent from a year earlier in the nine months to September 30, reaching 254 000 carats.
The mine produced 93 000 carats in the third quarter, 10 percent less than in the prior quarter.
