ZIMBABWE suffered another blow at the Tokyo Olympic Games after swimmer Peter Wetzlar failed to reach the semi-finals of the 100m freestyle on Tuesday afternoon.
The United States-based swimmer touched the board after 50.31 seconds in his 100m freestyle heat and was ranked 42 out of the 70 swimmers that took part in the heat.
Only the top 16 swimmers from the nine heats that took place progressed to the semi-finals.
However, the 24-year-old beat his personal best time of 50.50 seconds in his heat despite failure to progress to the next round of the competition.
Wetzlar together with teenage sensation, 17-year-old Donata Katai, who competed in the 100m backstroke on Sunday, earned their places in the Tokyo Olympics via two universality slots that were awarded to Zimbabwe Swimming by the International Swimming Federation (Fina).
His exit from the Games left Zimbabwe’s hopes for a medal on the shoulders of golfer Scot Vincent and sprinter Ngoni Makusha.
Vincent tees off tomorrow, while Makusha’s 100m heat is on Saturday.
