Envy is often described as a resentment which “occurs when someone lacks another’s quality, achievement or possession and wishes that the other lacked it”. This is the sort of thing clubbers at the newly opened Club Envy at Helensvale Shopping try and avoid. The upmarket and trendy club, formerly called La Vida, opened its doors to revellers last week and already the buzz has reached high levels as big spenders and those with expensive taste turn up in their numbers for a night out.
Even though the club is a bit expensive for the average revellers, owners believe it’s nothing out of the ordinary and made no apology.
“Gone are the days of hangers-on and bug-a-boos, we want those with serious money to come and enjoy without any worries about ‘poachers’ who want to have a drink without paying for it.
“This is what is trending in most upmarket clubs in Johannesburg such as Taboo and Kong. What we are saying is, there is no need to come to the club without money to spend.
“It is a sad reality, but there are some people who appreciate the quality standards and wish to enjoy the best there is on the club scene,” Tavona Gukuta popularly known as DJ T Bass, said.
He said nowadays it was not just about the music, but also what the clubs offer.
“The times and taste change. And clubs do not have to do things the traditional way, where people just go out without any prior booking.
“So our patrons have to book a table and drink as much as they want and at their own pace.”
His partner Paradzai Matare aka P Stylez reiterated that Club Envy has already made an impact as it drew scores of revellers since it opened its doors.
“The reception has been overwhelming and we believe we are offering a new experience in clubbing and the sort of people who come to the club are those willing to spend big bucks only. The first week of opening we had a huge mature crowd,” P Stylez said.
The new establishment which accommodates up to 600 patrons has three sections one is the VVIP, the VIP and the ordinary section where patron don’t have to book but simply pay the US$10 per head at the doors. There is a well-stocked bar but the sound and lighting is the same in all the sections save for the decor and seats.
The VVIP is probably where the big deal is. For starters, access to the high-end section is only done through booking.
Those who wish to spoil themselves have to pay up to US$500 and do not have to pay at the doors and have a drink of their choice especially the high-end bottles of whiskey, cognac, crystal or moet.
For those who feel that they ain’t smelling good, there are bottles of designer fragrances in the restrooms such as Gucci, Georgio Amani, Givency, Louis Vuitton, D&G, and what have you. Club Envy opens every Friday nights with T Bass and P Stylez on the turntables and is open on Saturdays for private functions.
