Ansa set to unveil nominees

NOMINATIONS for this year’s edition of the Annual National Sports Awards (Ansa) officially closed on Wednesday with nominees set to be unveiled on November 25.

Sports and Recreation Commission spokesman Tirivashe Nheweyembwa said they were now seized with the adjudication process set to run up to a day before the nominees are unveiled.

“We have closed the nomination process and adjudication is in full swing until November 24. The full list of our finalists will be unveiled a day after the closure of the adjudication process,” said Nheweyembwa.

The awards are divided into 17 categories, which are Special Acknowledgement of the Year Award; Merit/Achievement Award; Junior Sportswoman of the Year (Disability); Junior Sportsman of the Year (Disability) Junior Sportswoman of the Year, Junior Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year (Disability), Sportsman of the Year (Disability), Sportswoman of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, Technical Official (Umpire/Referee) of the Year, Coach of the Year, Sport Administration Award of the Year, Sport Development Award of the Year, Team of the Year, Junior Sportsperson of the Year and Sportsperson of the Year.

Charles Manyuchi is the reigning Sportsperson of the Year, while Rebecca Obelhorzer is the reigning Junior Sportsperson of the Year.

The Ansa are organised by the SRC to honour sporting excellence. They recognise talent, dedication, achievement and excellence by Zimbabwean sportspeople at different levels.

The awards are organised and awarded in accordance with the provisions of the Sports and Recreation Commission, Act, Chapter 25;15, revised in 1996, part III, section 19 and subsection (p).

The awards’ night has been tentatively set for December 16 in Harare where four yesteryear sportspersons will be inducted into the Zimbabwe Sports Hall of Fame.

The Zimbabwe Sports Hall of Fame is meant to honour yesteryear athletes and officials that would have represented the country exceptionally well.

To be inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame, they must have retired from active sports for at least three years and should not have been charged with offences relating to doping or any other offence that puts the name of the country into disrepute.

Inductees can be honoured posthumously.

So far 10 former sports personalities were inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 and these include legendary footballer George Shaya, the 1980 Olympics ladies hockey team, sprint king Artwell Mandaza, shooting champion David Westerhout, former national cricket team skipper and coach Dave Houghton, diver Evan Stewart, bowler Florence Kennedy, golfers Dennis Watson and Collin Harvey as well as rugby star Ian Robertson.
