The Government has managed to put anthrax cases under control by vaccinating all the cattle in the areas that are prone to the disease.
Last season, thirty-six cattle died due to anthrax in Chipinge, Hurungwe, and Gokwe South and North.
About 518 people who contracted anthrax were also reported, but no reports of deaths have been received.
Department of Veterinary Field Services director Dr Jairus Machakwa said the country is now very safe, adding that the Government has supported vaccination by supplying the required funds for the vaccines to prevent the occurrence of the disease.
”Last year, we had some cases of anthrax in our country. We also have situations of anthrax in our neighbouring countries, and so we were able to vaccinate cattle in the anthrax prescribed areas and able to bring the situation under control where few cases have been recorded.”
Dr Machakwa indicated that in the next season, they will procure stocks and vaccinate before the problem emanates
The country requires 1,2 million vaccines annually to curb the disease.
