Zimbabwe Book Publishers Association president Mr Blazio Ginio Tafireyi said book piracy was rampant in the country and something had to be done urgently. Mr Tafireyi said that they came up with resolutions that address the issue of book piracy.

“Piracy is a criminal offence just like stock theft or possessing or smoking marijuana. Just like what police do by arresting the culprits without a complainant, they should follow suit with book piracy,” he said.

He said the police must treat piracy like any other crime and impound equipment used to commit it.
“The equipment used to pirate is like any other equipment used to commit a crime and this equipment must be impounded. Local authorities are allowing street vendors, especially of books, to mushroom everywhere though they have designated areas for flea markets,” he said.
Mr Tafireyi said publishers and authors must start with immediate effect, the systematic reporting of book piracy cases to the police.
