CHICKEN INN FC coach Joey Antipas has accepted his side’s fate.
They have to settle for being the league’s bridesmaids. Their goal at the beginning of the season was to win the league.
The Gamecocks looked well on course to achieving their goal when the season started but their campaign came off the rails along the way and they surrendered their early advantage to FC Platinum who are cruising to their fourth straight title.
The Gamecocks are 10 points behind leaders FC Platinum with just six games to the season end. Second spot they now seek is not guaranteed as Chicken Inn have to compete with Dynamos and Highlanders for that position.
A point separates Chicken Inn and Dynamos while the gap between third placed Highlanders and Chicken Inn is six points.
After watching his side beat Whawha 1-0 at Luveve Stadium on Saturday, Antipas conceded that the title had slipped away from them.
“We just have to fight for second place because first place is out of reach. We did well to grind a result at Vengere. We collect three again today (Saturday). We have to keep going step by step,” said Antipas.
His side was far from their best when they beat Whawha but Antipas was pleased they had managed to record two wins in a row.
The hosts only found the back of the net in 76th minute through Brian Muza. The striker headed home a substitute Nelson Ketala cross from close range.
It was Muza’s 11th goal of the season and brought an end to a dry spell which had seen the second leading goal scorer last find the target on June 25 in a 4-1 drubbing handed out to Cranborne Bullets away. — @innocentskizoe
