DURBAN — AmaZulu coach Joey Antipas insists his club will not rely on veteran striker Siyabonga Nomvethe to provide goals in the Absa Premiership this season. Even at the age of 39, Nomvethe scored 17 goals in the National First Division last term, just three behind Golden Boot winner Sedwyn George, who has since left Royal Eagles for Ajax Cape Town. Former Bafana Bafana striker Nomvethe has shown no sign of slowing down either as he scored twice in the Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup semi-final win over Swaziland giants Mbabane Swallows at the weekend.
Antipas then decided to rest the forward in the final against Bloemfontein Celtic, but Usuthu struggled up front and eventually succumbed to a 1-0 defeat after a solitary strike from Phunya Sele Sele’s Kabelo Mahlasela.
Former Chicken Inn coach Antipas, though, insists his side will not be relying solely on “Bhele” when it comes to goals this coming season and feels other players can help carry the load.
“I think we’ve got enough goal scorers. I think it is just a matter of these guys getting the confidence,” countered Antipas.
“I think if they start scoring goals we can get goals from quite a few players in the team.
Bhele is currently sitting on 119 goals in the PSL and the former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates striker says he’s eager to increase his tally this season.
“Of course, I’d love to increase my tally of goals and that is what I intend to do,” Nomvethe said. — Kick-Off.
