FORMER Mighty Warriors captain Nomsa “Boyz” Moyo has urged Copa Coca-Cola and Nash to establish a girls’ soccer league to develop the women’s game instead of just holding the annual schoolgirls’ tournament.
“I’m appealing to Copa Coca-Cola and Nash to start a league that these girls can play in. The girls played amazingly well and I would want to see them play for the national team one day,” Moyo said.
She said the national women’s team needs a large pool to select from and a girls’ national league would be ideal.
“The national team needs a large pool to select from and these youngsters we saw playing can provide exactly that. With proper grooming, we’d have a killer national team that can reach greater heights,” she said.
The schools’ second term closes in two weeks’ time, and with it marks the end of ball games so all girls without clubs have to wait for the 2016 second term to participate in the Copa Coca-Cola competition.
Nash vice-president Arthur Maphosa said they had previously deliberated on the issue.
“We agree with Moyo but financial challenges remain the major stumbling block. We want to work with women’s soccer clubs to help us keep the girl child fit and playing football all year round,” said Maphosa.
