Arenel Movers FC head coach Kudzai Mhandire has bemoaned the increasing walkovers that have punctuated the Zifa Southern Region Dvision One league which he blamed on prevailing economic challenges.
A number of Southern Region Division One sides do not enjoy sound sponsorship, a development that has seen them failing to fulfil fixtures.
In the second half of the on-going Southern Region Division One campaign, Arenel Movers have walked over Mountain Climbers and Hwange based DRC United
“Us as Arenel Movers, we reckon these walkover matches are going to affect us in the long run. Having two consecutive walkovers doesn’t work in our favour. It’s actually a setback,” said Mhandire.
He said teams want to play football and not just earn points without kicking the ball.
“You can only enjoy football when you play against another team so these walkovers defeat the whole purpose,” said Mhandire.
Arenel Movers have proved to be a dominant force in the league with Adachi and Taen Vision breathing down their neck in a league that has seen troubled Zimbabwe Saints being expelled.
Chauya Chikwata were barred from taking part in the league on September 14 for failing to fulfil fixtures and not paying affiliation fees.
This is not the first time the struggling side has faced the axe as in 2014 they were kicked out under similar circumstances.
Meanwhile, on Saturday Arenel hammered Ciwu 5-0 in a match that was played at White City Stadium’s B Arena.
Arthur Ndlovu scored the opener for Arenel in the first half before Leroy Ndlovu, Godknows Sibanda, Archbold Maphosa and Mlungisi Ncube added the other four in the second half.
The victory moved Arenel’s points tally to 54, meaning they retained pole position. They remain unbeaten this season after 21 games.
ZPC Hwange are second on the table with 50 points after they edged third placed Talen Vision 1-0.
