A manhunt has been launched by police for a gang of 40 robbers, armed with machetes, knives and spears, who raided a mine in the Glendale area, attacking and killing a 19-year-old man.
Dhalala Kakowe died after being stabbed on the chest and neck.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the attack was on Rana Mine on Slemish Farm on Monday at around 9pm.
“The motive behind the attack is not yet known The victim died on the spot. Anyone with information should report at any nearest police station,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.
During the past few years, gangs of machete-wielding robbers have been active, especially in mining areas, robbing people of pure gold, gold ore and cash.
In September last year, a 27-year-old Chegutu man was attacked and killed with machetes and axes while pushing his vehicle that had run out of fuel.
In that attack, a gang was travelling in a Nissan Caravan kombi, registration number AFA7071 and two Honda Fit vehicles attacked Polite Muzenda aged 27 and his two friends who were pushing a Toyota Harrier vehicle. Talent Mutandwa and another suspect only identified as Obert, disembarked from the vehicle and fired two shots in the air with unidentified firearms.
The other suspects went on to strike the victim with machetes and axes on the head and left leg after the victim’s friends had fled.
The suspects drove off to an unknown destination after the attack.
