ARMED robbers broke into the home of a Roman Catholic priest, attacked a domestic worker and escaped with more than US$3,000 in cash and valuables.
The robbery occurred in the Mt Carmel area of Headlands.
Acting Manicaland Provincial Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, said the robbery occurred at around 1am on November 6.
Margaret Mafemo, 22, a domestic worker at the homestead, locked the doors and went to bed with her two-year-old daughter.
The two armed robbers allegedly broke a padlock and stormed into the spare bedroom where the woman was sleeping. “They poured cold water on her, demanded her cellphone and tied her hands and legs with wire before asking for money.”
The robbers allegedly claimed they knew that Francis Nyahumbi, the Roman Catholic priest, kept large sums of cash.
Mafemo denied any knowledge that Nyahumbi kept large sums of money.
She gave them the US$14 she had in her purse.
The armed robbers then searched the house, found US$1,000 in Nyahumbi’s jacket, an HP laptop, and a Samsung Galaxy phone.
According to police reports, the robbers used a new motorbike, which was parked in the dining room, to escape.
The motorbike was later found after it was abandoned closer to the priest’s homestead.
Police said the total value of stolen property was US$3,129, of which US$1,400 has been recovered.
