A security guard at Neshuro Growth point in Mwenezi is battling for life in hospital after he was shot and seriously injured by two unknown armed robbers who pounced and raided two shops at the business centre before getting away with R21 000 and US$400 in cash.
Lazarus Chuma (age unknown) was shot once with a pistol by one of the suspects and the bullet ripped through the right side of his lower abdomen on Monday evening.
Chuma is in critical condition at Masvingo General Hospital.
The suspects pounced on Chingwanga Supermarket and Mai Tina General Dealer at the sprawling growth point around 6.30 pm and ordered employees in the two shops to lie on the floor facing downwards after one of them had shot Chuma.
They also fired three shots into the air to instill fear in the employees before raiding safes and looted cash.
At Chingwanga Supermarket where Chuma was on guard, police said the suspects got US$400 and R20 000 before proceeding to Mai Tina’s shop where they got away with R1000 and vanished into the dark using a back door.
According to Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, the suspects also got away with three mobile phones belonging to employees at the two shops.
Inspector Dhewa said a manhunt for the two suspects was underway with police appealing for information leading to their arrest.
The latest armed robbery at Neshuro, comes as armed robbers are on the prowl in Masvingo having pounced at Madamombe business centre in Chivi, a few days ago, where they got away with cash and cellphones from several shops.
