The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has warned traditional leaders in Mashonaland West province to be wary of people in their areas who were working with the country’s detractors with a view of reversing the gains of the liberation struggle.
Addressing chiefs in the province during a Traditional Leaders Day in Nyabira last Friday, ZNA Brigadier-General Kasirai Tazira said chiefs were the vanguard of peace in the country.
The event was organised by the Mechanised Brigade Commander Brig-Gen Steven Gwekwerere and Brig-Gen Tazira stood in for ZNA Commander Lieutenant-General Edzai Absolom Chakanyuka Chimonyo.
“Chiefs play a very important role of maintaining peace and stability in the country and also in preserving our culture. They also play an important in the political and economic stability of the country,” Brig-Gen Tazira said.
He said during the liberation struggle, the chiefs also played an important role for the country to obtain independence.
“However, you should always remember that they are some detractors in your areas who want to reverse the gains of the liberation struggle. They also want to reverse the land reform programme.
“These detractors are not coming holding guns but are using various ways such as giving people sweets and food in a bid to achieve their objectives. Be wary of them because you are our first line of defence,” Brig Gen Tazira said.
He said most of these detractors were receiving donor funds from some western countries to achieve this. He said the ZNA had been and is still playing a critical role in assisting communities by building schools and clinics among others to develop the country.
“There is no one who can come from their countries to develop our country other than ourselves. We should all play in role in developing our own countries. We should also remain united,” Brig Gen Tazira said.
He expressed concern over violence cases that were being perpetrated by some members of the opposition MDC Alliance before and after the elections.
He said chiefs should play a role in their areas by urging people in their areas to help develop the country rather than being used to destroy the country through various ways.
Brig Gen Tazira urged them to also report any criminal activities involving soldiers and other people masquerading as members of the army.
The event was attended by 28 chiefs from Mashonaland West province, both senior and junior army officers and Government officials.
The chiefs also received hampers that included 20kg maize seeds, fuel coupons and other goodies.
