Army officer, wife killed in crash

A SENIOR army officer and his wife died when a truck rammed into their vehicle just outside Kwekwe City along the Harare- Bulawayo Road on Saturday. Colonel Charles Matema and his wife Patricia were on their way to Harare for a wedding. The accident occured at the Gokwe turn-off. Col Matema was a director of civil military relations based at army headquarters in Harare.

The officer commanding Gweru rural district Chief Superintendent Conrad Mubaiwa confirmed the accident.

He said the bodies were taken to Kwekwe hospital mortuary.

“I confirm that we received a report of an accident that occurred yesterday along the Harare- Bulawayo Road. Charles Matema and Patricia Matema died on the spot and the driver of the truck which collided with their vehicle was injured and is admitted to Kwekwe hospital,” said Chief Supt Mubaiwa.

He said the driver of the truck from Gokwe failed to stop at a Give Way sign and the truck then rammed into Col Matema‘s vehicle.
