LONDON. — Arsene Wenger is ready to sign a new two-year deal — but Arsenal are beginning to plan for life after him. Arsenal have, in fact, added Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers and Everton manager Roberto Martinez to their list of options as the club begin to look to life after Wenger.
Mirror Sport understands manager Wenger has agreed the deal in principle and is preparing for next season by discussing transfer targets, improvements at the training ground and player contracts. But intriguingly, the Frenchman’s fresh pact with the Gunners he has managed since 1996 could be for only two years rather than the original idea of three, as Wenger knows the pressure is mounting on him from fans to win silverware.
Those two years would also give Arsenal time to line up potential replacements with Borussia Dortmund’s Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola of Bayern Munich, Liverpool’s Rodgers, Everton boss Martinez and Wenger’s current No. 2 Steve Bould likely to be on their list.
The Daily Telegraph claims Rodgers, who is doing a superb job in charge of Liverpool, is one option being considered, along with his Merseyside rival Martinez.
Borussia Dortmund manager Klopp – a man who has spoken of an interest in working in England — is also believed to be on the list, along with current Arsenal No. 2 Bould.
The Gunners are said to be looking into each potential candidate and discussing their qualities, although no formal negotiations will take place until Wenger’s future exit. — The Mirror/The Daily Star
