LONDON. — Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed he will spend money in January after messing it up in the summer. The Gunners signed five players in the last window but were left short at the back as Thomas Vermaelen moved to Barcelona without being replaced.
Alexis Sanchez was the marquee summer addition and his £30m deal from Barcelona appeared to be a signal of their intentions.
Danny Welbeck arrived from Manchester United and despite the addition of Calum Chambers and Mathieu Debuchy, a couple of injuries could see the Gunners seriously low on numbers in defence.
Wenger said: “We won the FA Cup with a difficult run, but we managed to deliver the trophy and it makes us stronger, more confident and I believe we will have a strong season.
“We bought good players, I believe we’ve done remarkably well in the transfer market. We wanted one more player, but couldn’t.
“We will try to rectify that in January.
“We have a good core of young British players, who feel the value of our club. Slowly the modern game has lost that.
Arsenal are preparing to launch a £32million bid for Borussia Dortmund star and Manchester United target Mats Hummels.
The Germany international was linked with a move away from the German giants over the summer, but opted to remain with Jurgen Klopp’s side.
United boss Louis Van Gaal is desperate to bring Hummels to Old Trafford this January as he aims for a top-four finish, although it is believed that the 25-year-old wants Champions League football.
That has opened the door for Gunners boss Wenger, who has just two recognised centre-backs in his squad.
The Frenchman is keen to pair Hummels alongside Laurent Koscielny at the heart of his defence, and according to various reports, Wenger is ready to splash the cash in the next transfer window.
Hummels has previously stated that he isn’t interested in a move to the English Premier League, but recently claimed that he would consider a switch if the suitors in question played an attractive brand of football.
He said: “If a club with a bigger reputation than Dortmund were to make a move, but I don’t like the way they play football, I wouldn’t even consider a move.
“At Dortmund, the style of play is exactly the way I want to play football.” — Daily Express.
