LIVERPOOL owner John W Henry appeared to ridicule Arsenal’s latest bid for Luis Suarez yesterday after the Gunners reportedly tabled an offer of just over £40 million for the striker. The unusual offer of 40 million and one pound was intended to trigger a clause in the Uruguayan international’s contract that says Liverpool must inform the striker of Arsenal’s interest.
Henry said on his verified Twitter account: “What do you think they are smoking over there at Emirates?” Arsenal play at Emirates Stadium.
Suarez was due to discuss his future with coach Brendan Rodgers in Melbourne yesterday where Liverpool are playing their next pre-season tour match against the Melbourne Victory.
Arsenal have already had one bid for Suarez rejected by Liverpool, who say they are under no obligation to sell the player.
Suarez joined up with Liverpool’s squad on Monday. He still has to serve six matches of his 10-match ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic on 21 April, but can play in their pre-season friendlies.
Meanwhile, the clock on the giant scoreboard showed 9.37pm, when a cheer erupted around the MCG Stadium and a man wearing a Red shirt shuffled towards the touchline, whistling as he went.
After shaking hands with three of his teammates and rubbing another one on the head, Suarez walked onto the pitch and was able, for the first time since 21 April, to take part in an official game of football for Liverpool.
By the time it had turned 9.59pm, Suarez had done what he is best at, creating the final goal of the night with a sharp turn and a prodded cross.
That Liverpool beat Melbourne Victory 2-0, thanks to a goals strike from Steven Gerrard and Iago Aspas, became a subsidiary matter once Rodgers decided the moment was right to reintroduce Suarez.
The question now is for how much longer he will be able to do that.
Wanted by Arsenal, watched by Real Madrid, the future of the man dubbed El Pistolero is a huge issue and how it pans out will have a massive bearing on his current club’s future.
Love him or loathe him – the 95,446 spectators in the MCG were in the first camp – he is a gifted footballer, one who will not be easily replaced.
The battle to gain fitness is going smoothly for Liverpool in the southern hemisphere but it is the fight to keep Suarez at Anfield that must be won.
