adminAn electricity artisan working for a company sub-contracted by Zesa Holdings to install pre-paid meters was recently electrocuted while preparing to install the meters in Harare’s Glen View 1 suburb.
Mr Chenjerai Mutangadara (43), who worked for Solahart Zimbabwe Ltd, was electrocuted after power was mysteriously restored as he scaled an electricity pole.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda confirmed the incident.
“The deceased was installing a pre-paid meter along Third Avenue in Glen View 1 during a load-shedding period.
Unfortunately, power was restored during the course of the installation and he came into contact with a live cable.
“He was rushed to Harare Central Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Police are investigating the incident, but we suspect there was no foul play.”
Inspector Chibanda urged Zesa authorities to prioritise the safety of engineers as police have recorded an increasing number of similar incidents across the country since last year.
Zesa plans to install 800 000 pre-paid meters by 2018.
Over 400 000 households have so far benefited from the initiative.
