A MAJESTIC lion drawn by Zimbabwean visual artist Tonderai Mujuru, known globally as The Pencil Knight, has turned into gold — fetching a whopping US$9,300 at a United Kingdom charity auction.

The stunning charcoal and pastel masterpiece, titled “King of Shadows,” was sold under the hammer at the 20th Annual Make A Difference (MAD) Leadership Foundation Gala.

Every dollar raised goes towards education and welfare for underprivileged youths in Southern Africa. It was a moment that blended art, emotion, and purpose — a powerful reminder that creativity can transform lives.

“This lion is my tribute to the wild that shaped me,” said Mujuru after the sale.

“I walk this path in gratitude, for every mentor who sharpened my pencils and every hand that lifted me across borders.

“The journey continues, one stroke at a time — not because I am fearless, but because the calling is greater than fear.”

“King of Shadows,” depicting a lion emerging from darkness, captivated bidders with its intensity and depth, symbolising the resilience of Africa and the artist’s own journey from humble beginnings to international recognition.

For Mujuru, the biggest reward wasn’t the amount raised, but what it will do.

“To know that my art can help open doors for others – that makes my heart pound with joy,” he said.

The artist, who once served with the Zimbabwe Republic Police before becoming a full-time creative, has become known for using his pencil as a weapon for change.

His work merges breathtaking realism with a mission – to uplift communities, protect wildlife, and inspire the next generation.

Mujuru has previously donated art proceeds to build a community clinic in Churu Farm, Glenview, proving that his art is as much about service as it is about beauty.

Through projects such as the Swiss-Zim Heritage Gallery and Artgal.Online, he continues to promote Zimbabwean art on the global stage while advocating for conservation through his wildlife-themed exhibitions, including Echoes of the Wild and African Tale.

The MAD Leadership Foundation, founded by rugby legend Francois Pienaar in 2003, provides educational opportunities for disadvantaged youth in South Africa.

The organisation described Mujuru’s donation as a heartfelt contribution to its mission of empowering young leaders through education and mentorship.
