DESPITE losing his spark, going off the map, under the radar, and being upstaged by a new generation of MCs, urban grooves pioneer David Chifunyise, who dropped the microphone and picked up a computer, is a defiant man as he declared that he was dropping a new album soon.
In an interview, Chifunyise, who is the founder and owner of a software company, told Sunday Leisure that his critics are wrong to say that he has lost it and is washed up — they have the wrong impression and he has set up a studio to shut them up.
“I have been around, although I took a break for some time to concentrate on my software company. I do not think I have fizzled out as people might think as I have an album that I am working on that will be released soon. I have also opened a studio and I will be producing music for other musicians soon,” he said.
There is no doubt that Chifunyise was a trendsetter and there was a time his music was loved. The question that begs an answer is whether it is still loved and the son of former Permanent Secretary in the then Ministry of Sport, Arts and Culture Stephen Chifunyise empathically answers yes, when asked. In his view he is an itch that they can’t scratch.
“Music is diverse and I am happy that these (new) genres are coming up. It shows that there is talent in the country and I will continue making music that my fans and followers like,” he said.
Like most musicians whose confidence erases the thin line that separates confidence and arrogance, Chifunyise does not hesitate when he affirms that the artistic talents he has flows in his blood — it’s a gene that he took from his father who is still active in the arts world and late mother, Tisa Chifunyise who was an actress and singer.
“My father is still actively involved in arts. He is a playwright and still continues to inspire me as the arts have always kept the flame alive in my family. My late mother was also a musician and an actor and she always used to give me the urge to venture into the arts industry. So that is where I got it from and I started singing when I was very young and my parents were always supportive,” he said.
Chifunyise let slip that his son (he refused to divulge his name) is also blessed with his singing genes and true to the saying that an apple never falls far from the tree, his son will soon be releasing a debut album.
He said: “I have an 11-year-old son who is also venturing into the music industry and his album is almost done. I cannot reveal his name as yet, people will discover him with time and I am sure he will also make an impact in the music industry as well,” he said.
