Asfour re-elected for Comesa council

Egypt’s Dr Amany Asfour will lead the Comesa Business Council for two more years following her re-election as chairperson of the new board of directors at the council’s 10th Annual General Meeting in Lusaka, Zambia last week.Dr Asfour was re-elected to serve a second two year term.

She will be joined on the board by Azim Currimjee – Mauritius as First Vice Chairperson and Flora Mutahi, Kenya the Second vice Chairperson.

The elections which took place during the on last Friday also elected directors of the board that include Solomon Afework — Ethiopia, Karl Chokotho — Malawi, Stephen Ruzibiza — Rwanda, Wilson Nancy — Seychelles, Amna Mohammed Ibrahium Elnour — Sudan and Roseta Chabala — Zambia.

The CBC is the recognised apex business member organization in the region, and a private sector institution of COMESA.

The CBC represents private sector interests at the highest levels of decision making in the region. The CBC provides key market driven services to its membership, namely— business advocacy, business support services — linkages, partnerships and market intelligence, and lastly membership development — technical and productive capacity building.

The AGM was attended by the CBC membership, including private and the public sector stakeholders from the 19 COMESA countries as well the development partners such as USAID.

Besides elections, the meeting validated the key achievements of the institution during the period 2015-2016 and reviewed the roadmap towards 2017.

An award ceremony was also organised for three key buyers in recognition of their efforts in promoting local sourcing in the region as part of the Local Sourcing for Partnerships Project.
