Association of Zimbabweans in Kenya launched

Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Kenya, Uganda and Somalia Winpeg Moyo recently presided over the official launch of the Association of Zimbabweans Living in Kenya (AZiKe).

The association seeks to provide a platform for social cohesion and preservation of cultural identity for Zimbabweans living in the East African country.

In a statement, the association said: “The launch was yet another milestone on the part of the Zimbabwean community and Embassy of the Republic of Zimbabwe in Kenya, whose relationship with the Zimbabwean diaspora continues to be strengthened through constant interaction and prompt responses to the welfare of Zimbabweans living in Kenya.

“Despite the association having been founded 14 years ago, in 2009, the official launch marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Zimbabwean diaspora in Kenya, providing a wider platform for social cohesion, support networks and the preservation of cultural identity.”

The launch ran under the theme of shared heritage and strengthening of socioeconomic bonds. It brought together a diversity of Zimbabweans — including those in business, the academia, agriculture, financial institutions and international organisations — based in Kenya and beyond.

In her keynote address, Ambassador Moyo commended the dedication of AZiKe members. She urged the members to work together to realise Zimbabwe’s developmental aspirations.

The ambassador urged all Zimbabweans to take up the responsibility of building their motherland. She said the Second Republic was dedicated to facilitating the inclusion of all Zimbabweans towards attaining an economically vibrant nation.

AZiKe interim chairperson Dr Fungai Makoni paid tribute to the founding members of the association. He thanked the interim executive committee and the organising committee for their support and dedication to ensuring that the event was a success.

The association’s overarching objective is to provide a platform for cultural exchange, professional networking and mutual assistance among its members.
