At least 40 killed, dozens injured in N1 bus crash en route to Zimbabwe

At least 40 people have been killed and dozens injured in a bus crash on the N1 near Makhado, in Limpopo, South Africa.

The bus was travelling from Gqeberha to Harare in Zimbabwe.

Authorities are still piecing together details of what could have led to the accident.

The N1 has been closed in both directions.

Motorists travelling between Musina and Louis Trichardt are advised to use the Witvlag and Williespoort roads.

Provincial Transport Department Spokesperson Matome Taueatsoala says emergency services personnel, officers as well as MEC Violet Mathye are at the scene.

Taueatsoala says, “We can confirm that a mjaor accident involving a bus has occurred on the N1 near Ingwe lodge outside Makhado on the way to Musina. The details of the accident are yet to be released and MEC Mathye is going to the scene. The road is currently closed and the alternative road are as follows if you’re travelling from Makhado to Musina you must the Witvlag, turn off; if you’re travelling from Musina to Makhado use the Williespoort turn off.”
