BULAWAYO Athletics Board (Bab) chairperson Watson Madanyika says the return of sport comes at the right moment as it gives them enough time to come up with a strong team for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games to be held in Lesotho from December 3-12.
The Games were postponed in December last year due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The decision to postpone the Games by 12 months was taken by the AUSC Region 5 Ministers’ Troika in July last year.
“As a province we are happy that athletes are back on the track. We are ready to resume our sport and are excited about the return of activities. The move to allow sport to start comes at an opportune time as it will give our Under-18 athletes that will be travelling to Lesotho for the Region 5 Games in December time to prepare,” said Madanyika.
“Obviously the other task at hand now will be to revise our calendar to include more competitions. We are hoping to have as many competitions as we can so that we can select the best team for Lesotho,” he said.
The AUSC Region 5 Youth Games are staged every two years and hosting by member countries is on a rotational basis in alphabetic order.
Except for last year when they were postponed, the Games have been held consistently since the inaugural tournament in Maputo, Mozambique, in 2004 and they bring together about 2 000 Under-18 athletes from the region. – @innocentskizoe
