AU-Comesa observer team impressed by election preps

 The African Union-Common Market for East and Southern Africa (AU-COMESA) joint Election Observation Mission jetted into Zimbabwe on Monday ahead of the 2023 Harmonised Elections to be held on Wednesday.

 The team is headed by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan and was received by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Permanent Secretary Ambassador James Manzou.

 In a tweet on the Ministry’s page, Amb Manzou said preparation have been going on well

 “The election preparations are going well with His Excellency President Mnangagwa continuously calling for peace. The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has fulfilled all Constitutional requirements regarding the holding of elections,” read the Tweet.

 Mr Jonathan thanked President Mnangagwa and Zimbabweans for organising the elections despite sanctions.

 “His Excellency Goodluck Jonathan appreciated His Excellency President Mnangagwa, all electoral players, and the citizenry for the comprehensive Harmonised Election preparations given the sanctions imposed on the country,” read the Tweet.

 The AU-COMESA mission will join various other observer groups, such as the EU Election Observation Mission and the SADC teams, already stationed in the country’s 10 provinces.

 On Wednesday, August 23, Zimbabweans go to the polls to elect a president, National Assembly and local authority representatives.
