THE African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Games’ local organising committee (LOC) has handed over basketball equipment to the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) in line with government’s asset disposal plan and legacy concept.
The equipment was used during the AUSC Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games in December 2014.
The Games’ LOC chairman Khonzani Ncube said they had consulted the association on the disposal of the equipment after the tournament to help upgrade the level of basketball in the city.
“The equipment has been moved to the home of basketball, BCD (Bulawayo Club for the Disabled), so that any tournaments held there are up to standard. The city council wrote to us and we accepted their request for the equipment and we’ve handed them all equipment pertaining to basketball,” said Ncube.
She said the initial plan was to have the equipment installed at BCD but there was no time to install it in time for the Games and it was moved to the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair.
“The city fathers have assured us of tight security at BCD and we handed them all the basketball equipment. There are, however, minor adjustments that have to be made to the equipment and engineers have assured us that the adjustments are managable,” said Ncube.
She said there would be constant auditing of the equipment to ensure it is appropriately used.
The basketball equipment includes electronic gadgets, floor boards and hooks.
“We’re also planning to move the athletics equipment so that it can be stationed in one centre and avoid lifting it up and down because some of the gadgets are fragile,” Ncube said.
