‘Austerity measures will bear fruit’

SHURUGWI South Member of Parliament Cde Edmond Mkaratigwa says the “tough but necessary” economic reforms being implemented by Government should be supported by everyone in Zimbabwe.

He was addressing guests at his victory celebrations held in all 30 party districts in his constituency.

Government, under the leadership of President Mnangagwa, has instituted macro-economic measures anchored on the “austerity for prosperity” mantra as a prerequisite towards attaining Vision 2030 by which Zimbabwe is expected to be an upper middle income economy.

The reforms have seen Government cutting back extensively on expenditure and also doing away with some subsidies which were inflating its expenditure and dissuading private sector investment.

The changes have brought about transitory challenges for the general populace but Cde Mkaratigwa, who also chairs the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development, said as parliamentarians they had been assured that Government is working around the clock to address citizens’ concerns.

“As your representatives we have been assured that Government is aware of the challenges you are facing and they are working around the clock to address those challenges,” he said.

“Government has put in place several investor-friendly policies which I am very confident will result in foreign direct investment flowing in the not- so-distant future.

“The challenge is that fixing an economy is not an overnight occurrence as it involves completely transforming the macro-economic framework, so as a nation we might want to be a bit patient.

“The challenges you are facing today will soon be a thing of the past and the most important thing is that the reforms will yield fruits that will benefit everyone.”

Meanwhile, all the ward by ward celebrations have been graced by ace dendera musician Sulumani Chimbetu and have been marked with festivities and a talent identification crusade for people gifted in arts and sports.
