Firms fail to implement collective bargaining agreements

MANY employers are failing or delaying to pay workers resulting in strikes. Strikes have rocked Government services, councils, State-owned companies and the private sector over conditions of service.
Workers at the National Railways of Zimbabwe and Air Zimbabwe have gone on strike over the past few months to push for payment of outstanding salaries or demanding increases.
The two firms owe their workers over three months’ salaries.
Harare labour lawyer Advocate Arthur Marara said: “Companies are not honouring collective bargaining agreements they entered into with the workers, hence the protracted disgruntlements.”
Used car import ban suspended

GOVERNMENT has indefinitely suspended the ban on used car imports that are five-years-old and above while the importation of Left-Hand-Drive vehicles will not be allowed from November 1 this year.
The bans are provided for in Statutory Instrument 154 of the Road Traffic Act.
No Left-Hand-Drive vehicle will be allowed into the country from next month.
But those already in the country and those to be imported by October 31 will be allowed to continue plying the country’s roads until they outlive their economic lifespan.
The new arrangement will be provided for in the amended Statutory Instrument to be gaze-tted soon.
Prosecutors’ strike disrupts courts

PROSECUTORS and law officers yesterday went on strike protesting against salary discrepancies between them and magistrates.
An attempt by The Herald to get a comment from Deputy Attorney-General Mrs Florence Ziyambi on the strike failed after her secretary said she was “too busy to talk to the Press”.
Justice and Legal Affairs Deputy Minister Obert Gutu yesterday said he sympathised with the prosecutors, but said their concerns should be addressed by the AG’s Office.
“I sympathise with the prosecutors. Surely they hold the same qualifications with magistrates, but unfortunately we as a ministry no longer have the mandate to look into the nitty-gritty of prosecutors’ concerns.
