A car dealer from Avondale has appeared in court facing allegations of stealing a Mercedes Benz that had been left as surety for a loan.

Hillary Muchipisi (35) was charged with theft of a motor vehicle when he appeared before Harare regional magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa on Thursday.

He was advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

The complainant in the matter is Mr Makomborero Chinyanganya.

According to the State, represented by prosecutor Mr Rufaro Chonzi, the case stems from an incident that occurred on July 23, 2025, when Mr Chinyanganya, accompanied by a colleague, visited Guess Evolution Car Sale at No. 8 Cleveland Road, Milton Park, Harare.

He reportedly borrowed US$2 500 from the car sale’s director, Mr Felix Chanetsa, and left his Mercedes Benz A180 as collateral, agreeing to repay the money later.

In August 2025, Muchipisi allegedly approached Mr Chanetsa, claiming he had been sent by Mr Chinyanganya to settle the debt and collect the vehicle.

Believing the representation to be true, Mr Chanetsa released the car to Muchipisi after receiving the US$2 500.

On October 13, Mr Chinyanganya returned to Guess Evolution Car Sale to collect his vehicle after repaying the loan, only to discover that it had already been taken by Muchipisi.

Efforts to locate Muchipisi and recover the vehicle were unsuccessful, prompting Mr Chinyanganya to report the matter to ZRP Milton Park.

Following investigations, police arrested Muchipisi at his residence on August 21, 2025.

During questioning, he allegedly told investigators that he had sold the vehicle to an individual identified as Talent Munyanyi.

The car has not yet been recovered.
