BULAWAYO hip hop artiste, Cal_Vin, real name Calvin Mgcini Nhliziyo, says his latest album Year of the Vin, was prophetic after he secured three gongs at the Zimbabwe Hip Hop in Harare awards last Thursday.
The Bulawayo-born hip hop star won the Best Male Artiste, Album of the Year and Song of the Year at the awards ceremony held at Club 1+1 at Long Cheng Plaza. This was after the rapper was nominated in seven categories.
Year of the Vin was released in August and contains the Zikhuphani remix he did with South Africa’s hip hop super star Cassper Nyovest and Bona featuring local artiste Kronix.
That Luveve Boy, as Cal_Vin is popularly known, said 2015 had been a defining year in his career.
“I saw this coming. That’s why I named my second album The Year of the Vin as I strongly believed that this was my year. Yes people can say that it’s prophetic because of the things that I’ve achieved,” said Cal_Vin.
“This year I collaborated with Cassper and had my first music video in my career after Vault Cosmetics sponsored the shooting of Zikhupani”.
He said although he was excited about winning the three awards, he was gunning for four.
“I really wanted four awards; unfortunately I didn’t win the Best Producer award. It’s still fine because I still managed to win Best Album, Song Of The Year and Best Male which are the biggest awards to win as an artiste . . . and I got them in one night,” said Cal_Vin.
During the awards ceremony, there was a scuffle as Harare rapper Brice Mbada stormed the stage when Cal_Vin won the Best Male gong, claiming he was robbed.
According to media reports, Mbada wanted to attack Cal_Vin who ignored the disgruntled rapper and continued with his acceptance speech while the former was being escorted away by security.
Cal_Vin said he was shocked at Mbada’s actions and surprised that there was a hip hop artiste called Brice Mbada.
“I was really at a loss for words when Mbada tried to pull a Kanye West. I actually knew his name after the incident. I’ve never heard of him before. In all honesty I don’t know any of his works that he put out so for him to claim the Best Male award shocks me. In my opinion he hasn’t done enough to set himself above me. I mean not only are my works known in Bulawayo but also in his city and beyond Zimbabwe,” said Cal_Vin.
