B-Metro COMMENT: Zifa needs to put its house in order

Developments in the Zimbabwe Football Association around the elections and when the current administrationas mandate ends are a source of worry. A

Zifa has for many years courted controversy to a point that the leadership sought to change its name to escape its troublesome past.

It would seem that change of name, if it was successful, would have been in vain since the organisation is again courting controversy, with the leaders, who earlier indicated they were preparing for elections, intimating that their mandate does not end this year.

We hold no claim to being constitutional experts but we believe something is quite fishy when you get different versions from the same organisation about something as important as an electoral meeting.A Who is fooling who?

It is against this background that we would like to call upon the Philip Chiyangwa-led Zifa to adhere to the constitution to save us the blushes and the likely sanctions as a football nation.

Elsewhere in this issue we carry an article in which Zifa councillors have expressed concern over the issue of the mandate of the current administration as they contend their term ends this year while the associationas leaders believe that they still have two more years at the helm before elections to choose new leaders.

It should be understood that the leaders were not elected into office to serve in perpetuity but to run their race and hand over the baton at a given point, all in line with the associationas constitution.

But alas, we are now being burdened with different interpretations of the same constitution.

Our view is that the earlier this raging debate is brought to finality the better for our football.A Our football does not need this.

Our sponsors definitely cannot be expected to associate with an association that dithers on matters as fundamental as respecting its own constitution.A We are, however, heartened that the Sport and Recreation Commission appears to have taken interest in the matter and insisted that the constitution be followed.

We cannot afford any bungling in our football by people we have entrusted to develop the most popular sport in the country.A There are so many people that derive their livelihood directly or indirectly from football, and any conduct by those in authority that is likely to lead to sanctions from international football bodies, endangers their lives and should be condemned by the football loving public.

Our call to Zifa is that it should, through its conduct, create an image that is attractive to potential sponsors so that we can remember the current administration as having been the one that gave Zifa a positive ring to its name.

We believe it all starts with respecting the organisationas constitution, and resolving conflict within the confines of the football statutes.
