BAA winners’ prizes ready

Bulawayo Arts Awards winners are set to get their prizes tomorrow; two weeks after the inaugural awards were successfully held.

Winners in 38 categories walked away with gongs and various undisclosed prize monies.

Although not hinting how much each winner would receive, Nkululeko Nkala one of the organisers, said only individuals and groups would be given cash prizes. Institutions who won have been left out as their awards were more of recognition.

“As per our agreement according to the contracts we have with the winners, their prize monies will start being distributed two weeks after the awards.

“This means that as from this Friday, they should be getting their prize monies,” said Nkala.

He said they were still waiting on some sponsors to honour their pledges which are meant to be handed out to winners.

“We’re hopeful that some of our sponsors who haven’t honoured their pledges will come through. However, sponsors for some categories such as the Outstanding Film Actor, where Madlela Skhobokhobo won an acting scholarship worth $3 000 have honoured their pledges and what’s left is for us to hand over to the winners.”

Asked how much they had realised from the hosting of the event, Nkala said they were still balancing their books.

“By Friday, we’ll know how much revenue we got from the awards,” said Nkala.
