BAB to finalise Interprovincial Championships team

THE Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB) is set to finalise the selection of the provincial team that will take part at the Interprovincial Championships scheduled for Harare with a track and field event today.

The event will see over 200 athletes competing in more than 10 disciplines as they seek selection and refine their acts ahead of the national competition that are earmarked for 22 May at the National Sports Stadium.

BAB chairman, Watson Madanyika said while the province will use today’s competition to finalise the selection of athletes that will be sent to Harare, athletes from other provinces are also expected to attend the meet.

“There will be athletes from Matabeleland North, South and as far afield as Masvingo coming in to take part in Sunday’s meet.

“The participation of the other athletes will enhance the competition while making sure the runners will put in more effort.

“This is more about refining our practice as we head for the nationals so it will be good competition to have athletes from other provinces coming in,” he said.

Madanyika said the Bulawayo team will be announced after the meet that will see athletes competing in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, and 4x100m relay track events while field events include high jump, long jump, triple jump and shotput.

Today’s provincials are being held following the postponement of the Commissioner-General of Police 21km race that had been set for the Old Mutual Nkulumane Complex yesterday.

Madanyika said the race has been moved to 29 May.

“Yes, athletes were looking forward to the race and had already been registering but the good thing is that it has just been moved and was not cancelled so people can still keep on practicing as it will now be on 29 May,” he said.

The race is set to be the first long distance race to be held in Bulawayo this year following the easing of Covid-19 regulations.
