THE first round of this year’s edition of the Townshend and Butcher Trophy challenge was held last Sunday and four teams now progress to the semi-final stage.
The teams squared off at Barbourfields Stadium outside grounds.
In the first match, Mpilo United was beaten 2-1 by Golden Hotspurs. Mat High City got the better of LA Protonaz by 3-0.
In the other matches, security side Safeguard went hard on Suburbs FC who they beat 3-1.
FC Stars edged Third Avenue 2-1 to advance to the semi-finals.
The tournament which is run by the Bulawayo Amateur Football Association (Bafa), marks its 66th anniversary this year and is sponsored by Townshend and Butcher.
The sportswear and equipment shop has been behind the event since 1957 with the present owner having associated with the event since 1987.
Bafa chairman Nelson Ngwenya said they had a smooth start to the competition.
“The Townshend and Butcher Trophy games started well on Sunday morning.
“We are happy that there was good competition among the teams. If all goes as planned, the semi-finals matches will be played on Sunday at Barbourfields grounds again,” said Ncube.
In the semi-finals Safeguard will clash with Golden Hotspurs while FC Stars will face Mat High City.
Peter Leondios, the owner of sports apparel shop, Townshend and Butcher said in future he wants more teams to participate in the tournament.
At one stage there were over four divisions of the league participating.
“My wish is to have more teams participating in this tournament so that more talented players benefit.
“I understand many teams could not make it due to financial challenges,” he said.
The Townshend and Butcher Trophy has for years been the leading competition for the amateurs in Bulawayo.
