BALDMIN Holdings has stepped up as the main sponsor for the eagerly anticipated Bulawayo Half Marathon, marking the event’s revival after a 20-year hiatus.
Set to take place on 19 April at White City Stadium, the marathon promises to bring a renewed sense of excitement to the streets of Bulawayo.
As the key sponsor, Baldmin Holdings has played a pivotal role in making this event a reality, covering 70% of the total costs.
The remaining 30% will be raised through the support of the local Bulawayo community, which is expected to contribute to the event’s success.
The marathon’s return has been driven by the tireless efforts of Themba Mhlophe, the event organiser and veteran administrator, who sought approval from the City Fathers for the use of White City Stadium as the venue.
Mhlophe expressed his excitement about Baldmin Holdings’ involvement, emphasising the importance of the company’s contribution in bringing the event back to life.
“We are thrilled to have Baldmin Holdings as the main sponsor. Their generous support has been vital to the planning and execution of this marathon. This event not only celebrates the sport of running but also brings the community together in a meaningful way,” Mhlophe said.
The marathon will feature 21km, 10km, and 5km races, as well as a wheelchair race, allowing athletes of various abilities to participate.
With an entry fee of US$15, the event remains accessible to a wide range of runners. Registration opened on 15 January and will close on 15 April, providing plenty of time for athletes to sign up.
Those who register early will receive a running vest and cap, while the first 500 finishers will earn medals. Monetary prizes will also be up for grabs, with the winner of the open race taking home US$500, the runner-up receiving US$400, and the third-place finisher getting US$300.
Baldmin Holdings’ sponsorship is a testament to its commitment to supporting local events and fostering community engagement through sport. Their involvement has not only made the event possible but has also brought a sense of pride to the city as it prepares to host an event of this scale once again.
As the race approaches, excitement continues to build, with over 500 participants expected to take part.
In addition to Baldmin’s financial contribution, the event organisers have worked closely with Bulawayo City Council (BCC) to ensure that all logistical and safety measures are in place. The council has approved the event under specific conditions, including the need for police clearance, traffic management, and crowd control to ensure the safety of participants and spectators.
The event organisers are also required to indemnify the council against any damages or injuries that may occur during the event. @innocentskizoe
