Between the pair, Bale (53 per cent) and Van Persie (43 per cent) got 96 per cent of the votes cast by members of the association, which was formed by four journalists on September 22, 1947

Reflecting on another gong, Bale said: ‘‘It is a huge honour. It means a lot to win this award when you consider the number of players that have been outstanding for their clubs in the Barclays Premier League this season.
