FORMER Highlanders captain Gilbert ‘Gidza’ Banda has implored Bosso players not to slacken in their quest to end the club’s 19-year-old championship trophy drought.
Bosso last clinched the country’s elite football title in 2006 under the guidance of Methembe ‘Mayor’ Ndlovu with Banda the skipper.
In an interview from his South African base, the now retired Banda, a combative central defender during his playing days, challenged the present day Bosso army to continue doing well and bring back the old glory days.
Bosso have so far played three matches in the 2025 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.
They lost once, away to newcomers MWOS, conquered once (4-0 at home to Kwekwe United) and drew the same number of times (2-2 away to Greenfuel).
“The boys need everyone’s support for them to do well. Yes, the team lost a number of players but all I can say is that they need to fight hard. Fight hard for the Highlanders badge,” said Banda, a former Warriors player whose love and dedication to the Bosso badge was never doubted.
He added: “The boys should continue being motivated and they should now invoke the yesteryear spirits. We achieved a lot, courtesy of the love and support that we got from the fans and everyone who is still part of the Bosso family.
“I challenge the fans to give the boys all the necessary support,” said the Sizinda bred football star.
Bosso are trying to get in a trailblazing mood and end their championship league drought.
On Sunday March 30, they are set to take on free-spending Scottland at Barbourfields Stadium.
Dependable defender Peter Muduhwa, striker Lynoth Chikuhwa, midfielder cum defender Godfrey Makaruse and Marvelous Chigumira all moved to Scottland at the beginning of the year.
Fondly known as Gidza, Banda was part of the Bosso squad that conquered all and sundry combining well with the likes of Chipo Tsodzo, Danisa Phiri, creative Johannes ‘Tshisa’ Ngodzo, Anzilom ‘Malume’ Ndlovu, Honour Gombami, goalkeeper Washington Arubi and the late Richard “Dabuka” Choruma.
