The Government of Zambia, Uganda and Guyana have threatened to take action against Barclays Bank DCO over its connexions with South Africa, the bank’s annual general meeting was told here today.
Words were exchanged when a shareholder called on the Chairman, Sir Frederic Seebohm, to terminate his bank’s membership of the United Kingdom – South Africa Trade Association, and for removal of Mr. Harry Oppenheimer from the Bank’s international board.
With no support from other shareholders, the one protester failed on both counts.
A letter from Zambia government to Sir Frederic, which was read out at the meeting, advised him that should he and the bank fail to cease the “most improper” political activities to which Zambia objected, “the Government of Zambia will have to bear this in mind in its future consideration of the status of the interests of Barclays Bank DCO in the Republic of Zambia.”
The shareholder who raised the question, Mr. Jan Parsons, of London, afterwards would not disclose the contents of the protests by Uganda and Guyana because he had not been allowed to read them to the meeting, but he said they were “similar.” —Iana.
