A 45-year-old Hopley barber was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly killing a man believed to have been a victim of drug and substance abuse.
Police allege that Kudakwashe Tindo, enraged by events involving his client, grabbed a snooker stick and struck Aleck Butawu once on the left side of his stomach near the ribs.
Butawu tried to run but collapsed and later died.
The incident occurred at Mutsvubvu Shopping Centre in Southlea Park, Harare.
Butawu’s wife, Juliet Masocha (35), said her husband left home at around 11am to go to Mutsvubvu Shopping Centre to have his radio repaired.
She said that at about 1pm, Butawu started drinking at Mai Rai’s shebeen, located in Hopley Zone 6, in the Mutsvubvu area.
Masocha claimed that Butawu got drunk and lost his small radio, sparking his violent reaction.
“Due to drunkenness, my husband was said to have come out of the shebeen, took some half-bricks, and started throwing them everywhere while shouting about his lost radio,” she said.
“One of the missiles entered the barber’s shop and struck a client.” In response, Kudakwashe allegedly went into the shebeen, took the snooker stick, and hit her husband. The body of Butawu was taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
