BULAWAYO Amateur Swimming Association’s (Basa) has won the development gala that ended at Bulawayo City Pool yesterday.
The competition started on Friday and it was the first national event of the year.
Among the best BASA swimmers at the gala was Jamela Madonko who got eight medals in various categories.
Madonko is a member of Penguins Swimming Club.
After Basa swimmers’ impressive show in the tournament, Penguins Swimming Club coach was impressed with how Bulawayo swimmers fared throughout the event, adding that more is yet to come.
The Bulawayo team sealed the weekend well with an overall 1 469.50 points tally. Harare was second with 1 377, Midlands (674), Mashonaland Country Districts (370.50), Matabeleland South (196) and Matabeleland North with 40.
The total number of points accumulated by all teams was 4 127.
Some of the players that showed prowess on the pool include Bulawayo’s Rachel Ngwenya, Acacia Watson, Michelle Nkolomi, Ruvarashe Busuman and Lawndale Masiye-Moyo among others. Commenting on the performances by the youngsters, Basa vice-chairperson Watson Mhlanga said it was a display of talent and passion.
He said the swimmers showed that they had all it takes to build a future in the sport.
“They did well. It wasn’t easy but they all showed that they have dedication to the sport and with that mentality, they will go far. From what I saw in these past two days, the future of swimming in Zimbabwe is bright and things will get better from here,” said Mhlanga.
The junior championships event will be used to select teams that will represent Zimbabwe in upcoming regional and continental tournaments.
