Saturday action in the Bulawayo Basketball League will mark the end of the first half of the season before the league takes a break until the end of January. It has been a very competitive first half with the top four clubs – Highlanders, Kings, Unicorns and Giants all in the running for the championship.
Top of the log Highlanders with 17 points from nine matches will be out to maintain their spot when they take on third placed Unicorns who are tied on 15 points with fourth placed Giants.
Second placed Kings who are a point behind Bosso entertain Southern Mavericks while Giants cap the first half of the season with a date against Lords.
Sikhumbuzo “SV” Ndlovu, the Bulawayo Basketball Association secretary-general said it had been a lively first half and they are already looking forward to the last stanza.
“We might be going for a break but I tell you, everyone especially in the men’s category is looking forward to the second half.
“It has been an entertaining first half which is very wide open as any of the four teams has a chance of landing the title. No team has a 100 percent record and this opens the door for an exciting closing of the first half,” Ndlovu said.
He said clubs will have to resume their training after the holidays in order to prepare for the National Championships set for early next year.
In the women’s category, Ndlovu said school examinations affected their programme as clubs like Stars, Hawks and Oilers relied on school going players.
Southern Mavericks was admitted late into the league with Giants folding after losing most of their players to the former.
