THE Bulawayo Basketball League gets underway this afternoon at Khanyisile Sports Centre with five potentially explosive encounters taking place.
According to BBL secretary Admire Chafa, Lupane State University will take on league debutants Glow in the first men’s encounter of the day in which the new boys will seek to get off to a perfect start although they face a tough task playing a proven LSU outfit.
The second match will be a battle between returning rivals Highlanders and City Knights with Nust and Southern Mavericks sealing off the proceedings for the day.
Two matches are lined up for the women’s league, Lakers take on Divas in the opening ladies encounter while Angels will seek to upset Highlanders in the last game.
“We are very excited with the start of the league. This season we expect to see more competitive action that will make our league more exciting. As an association we have goals that we have set, we want to see academies joining our league, we want to further the sport in the city and we hope to achieve all this during the course of this season,” said Chafa.
Southern Mavericks are the defending champions for the women while Giants are the men’s champions. Both teams are out of action this weekend.
Teams in the league include LSU, Southern Mavericks, Nust, Lakers, Glow, Highlanders, these have men and women teams. Giants, Ostrich, City Knights and Oilers have men’s teams only, Divas and Angels are women’s only clubs.
Khanyisile will play host to this weekend’s action and the league is on a drive to take some of the league action to venues such as White City and Tshabalala tennis courts.
