Batoka project feasibility study nears completion

The feasibility study for the US$4 billion Batoka Hydro Power Project is set for completion by September after the short-listing of six international companies. At least 25 firms had expressed interest in constructing the station. When complete, Batoka will generate over 1 600 megawatts.

Speaking to journalists in France last week where a Government delegation is on a study visit on dam management, Secretary for Energy and Power Development Mr Partson Mbiriri said there was overwhelming interest in the project, stalled over the years by lack of finance.

Batoka Hydro Power Station will ease energy problems on both sides of the Zambezi River, significantly reducing Zimbabwe’s power deficit of 1 200MW.

The Zambezi River Authority, a statutory body jointly owned by Zimbabwe and Zambia is overseeing the build-operate and transfer project.
The company that builds the hydroelectric power plant will run it for a period agreed upon by the Zambian and Zimbabwean governments and then hand it over. — Herald Reporter/ZBC News.
