THE Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has issued broadcasting licences to six community radio stations — Chivi, Chomazumba (Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe), Dande FM (Dande), Jakata FM (Gutu), Ndera FM (Marondera) and Nhimbe FM (Makoni).
The move is aimed at boosting local content production, media diversity and community access to information.
It also allows communities to share their stories and preserve local cultures.
“This milestone reflects the authority’s ongoing commitment to expanding community access to information, strengthening local content production and promoting media diversity across Zimbabwe,” BAZ acting chief executive officer Engineer Mathias Chakanyuka said in a statement.
“The licensing of these stations is a significant step in empowering communities to tell their own stories, preserve local cultures and participate meaningfully in national dialogue.”
BAZ, Eng Chakanyuka said, remains committed to facilitating a vibrant, inclusive and compliant broadcasting sector that serves the needs and aspirations of all Zimbabweans.
A community radio station is a localised broadcasting service that caters to the specific needs and interests of a defined community, often in rural or hard-to-reach areas.
These stations are characterised by their community-driven approach, where local voices, perspectives and issues take centre stage. They are not merely entertainment platforms, but vital tools for community engagement, social mobilisation and development.
