BULAWAYO Basketball Association (BBA) women’s league teams Mavericks and Lakers will represent Zimbabwe at the forthcoming Federation of International Basketball Association (Fiba) Africa Club Championships slated for Botswana next month.

The Fiba Africa Club Championships are the premier professional basketball event for champions of leagues on the continent. BBA secretary Admire Chafa confirmed that Mavericks and Lakers had been nominated to represent Zimbabwe at the prestigious competition.

“We are very excited at the prospect of having teams in our league representing the country. Remember the top two teams in the country participate in the tournament. Mavericks and Lakers emerged tops, so they will do the business for us. We have not done really well in past tournaments, but we are confident that these two teams will do their best to improve our status on the continent,” said Chafa. Zimbabwe will also be represented by two men’s teams from Harare.

Meanwhile, the BBA will commence the 2017/18 league programme with a curtain raiser pre-season tournament pencilled in for September 15, with league games set to start on September 29.
