THE Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway (BBR) Company today commissions its US$1,5 million transhipment siding at West Nicholson, marking the launch of its first lithium concentrate export shipment as Zimbabwe strengthens rail logistics to support the country’s booming mining sector.

The inaugural shipment, being handled under a partnership between BBR, the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) and Silvergill Logistics, will be transported by rail to the Port of Maputo in Mozambique for export.
BBR general manager Mr Kumbulani Tendai Mabvura said the investment was a strategic milestone that supports Zimbabwe’s drive to grow the mining sector while improving the efficiency of bulk mineral transportation.

He said the West Nicholson transhipment siding was the latest addition to the country’s rail infrastructure and demonstrated BBR’s commitment to expanding capacity rather than simply maintaining existing assets.
“The facility is a strategic tool in Zimbabwe’s campaign to support growth in the mining sector and improve logistics within the sector,” said Mr Mabvura.
He said the project aligns with the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), which prioritises infrastructure development as a catalyst for economic transformation.

Designed primarily to accelerate the movement of lithium concentrates, the facility is expected to help Zimbabwe maximise value from its growing lithium industry by providing efficient and cost-effective transport to export markets.
Beyond lithium, the siding has also been designed to handle other bulk minerals, including iron ore and chrome, making it a key logistics hub for the Matabeleland region and the wider mining industry.
Minister of State for Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Albert Nguluvhe, is expected to officially commission the facility during today’s ceremony.
The commissioning comes as Zimbabwe continues to invest in transport infrastructure to improve mineral exports, reduce logistics costs and enhance the competitiveness of the country’s mining sector.
