THE police have called on members of the public to enjoy in a responsible manner during the festive season and avoid being in dangerous situations that may compromise their lives.
The festive season is a time synonymous with excitement, people throwing celebratory parties and having a good time so as to end the year on a high note.
However, with the excitement comes a dark cloud which usually accompanies this period as people tend to have fun failing to take responsibility for themselves.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said there was a need for people to be more vigilant during this period.
“Since we are already in the festive season, people should make sure that they party responsibly and hosts should make sure they take responsibility of everyone in their parties and ensure their safety.
“This follows a recent incident which saw a 20-year-old female who drowned in Killarney as they were celebrating her friend’s birthday,” said Insp Ncube.

The police spokesperson discouraged members of the public from using swimming pools especially under the influence of alcohol. He further urged parents and guardians to always monitor children under their care so as to avoid such incidents.
“We also advise those who are driving to practice caution when travelling, already we are receiving reports where people die in road accidents.
“Motorists have to make sure that their vehicles are roadworthy before getting on the road.
“Members of the public when preparing for their journey should make sure that the cars are safe and the drivers are sober,” said Insp Ncube.
The police spokesperson said beer drinking outlets should operate within the law, according to the stipulated time shown on their licences, warning that the police will not negotiate if one is found operating outside the authorised hours.

“The highest number of murder cases that happen in Bulawayo happen when people are coming from drinking outlets after time as late as 3am.
“So, the owners of beer outlets are encouraged to operate within authorised times,” he said.
Insp. Ncube said criminals view holidays differently, for them this is the time to increase their criminal activities and they take advantage of any slightest change that comes their way.
“The public give criminals leeway to steal and break in by leaving their houses unattended. A high increase in criminality is always recorded during this period such as murder, robbery, carjackings, house breakings and rape cases.
“For those who intend to travel and have no one to supervise their houses as ZRP we have house under supervision scheme where you can go to a local officer in charge and give them your house number and they will supervise it in your absence,” said Insp Ncube.
