FOLLOWING years of stagnation during which it literally went off the radar, Beach Soccer in Zimbabwe has finally taken off.

And if the level of enthusiasm being shown by the clubs and their players is anything to go by then ZIFA could sooner rather than later be able to start assembling national teams for this exciting version of the game.

ZIFA’s new leadership have since February been on a crusade to reform the association by ensuring that all affiliate structures, which include FUTSAL and Beach Soccer are revived.

The Hampdens Beach Soccer facility, which is located on the outskirts of Harare in Mt Hampden, was testimony of this revival as it was a hive of activity during the weekend, with more than 30 teams tak-ing part in a tournament.  The tournament, which was eventually won by Marines, drew sizeable crowds, with participating teams being drawn from Harare and Marondera.

Marines beat 16 Views in the final to win the US$500 first prize.

For their efforts 16 Views walked away US$300 richer.

But beyond the cup final it was the successful hosting of the tournament, which demonstrated that beach soccer is growing beyond its traditional Bulawayo base.

Charles Matsika, a long-time sports administrator, who was part of the event’s organising team said a lot of positives were drawn from the tourney.

“Personally, I noticed improvements in coaching standards, improved junior participation numbers, and renewed interest in beach-adapted football conditioning,” Matsika said.

“Progressing throughout Saturday and Sunday, the tournament concluded with a highly competitive final that showcased skill and athleticism’’.

Matsika is confident that such competitions like the one at Mt Hampden can only spur Beach Soccer’s growth.

One of the tournament participants Simon Chikwiramakomo, acknowledged as much adding that the event was proof that Beach Soccer was alive in this country.

“The event serves proof that the sport is alive and expanding.
